Working with a baby

My son Pascal has been on the waiting list for creche on the same street as his house. Getting a place in creche in the Netherlands is very difficult. You have to wait a year or more…you might have to sign up for the waiting list before you become pregnant to start it in time.
I was not able to think about a life year later when I was pregnant so I just signed up for a creche in the neighborhood. But wait, I could have done multiple waiting lists….I noticed that the other day. It means I have to find a way to work with a baby.
If I ask my husband in advance to take care of Pascal he can find some time for it. But basically I have to be with the baby most of the time. Since I am with Pascal all the time he gets involved in my work.
One of the examples is a video for Black Intention with Pascal and their babies, Natsumi and Ruben. The tune and lyrics of the music nicely fit to baby’s movements and their lovely smiles.
Another example is photography. Like most of the parents I take tons of photos of a baby too but with some prepared settings. This is one of the photo series I am working on right now.

I used a giant plastic box that my husband bought for the shop to fill it with organic goat’s milk. Pascal’s never had a giant tub like this filled with non mommy’s milk so he seemed to have enjoyed my art project.
And I take Pascal to lectures and meetings. When he is in a bad mood I have to go out of the room and sooth him but people don’t mind it so much.

Muziek en Kunst in MLK

The recorder trio Black Intention and Simsa Cho & dancers and I are having a concert and performance evening in Maarten Luther Kerk on Wednesday 11 March 20:00~.
I am VJing for Black Intention ( don’t know if video for classical music is still called VJ ) and afterwards the performance by Simsa Cho follows. My name is not seen on the site of Maarten Luther Kerk but I am in. You can see some of my old and new videos.

OTENBA

After a month maternity break I started working as an artist. This exhibition is the first one to work with a little baby. I had to leave the little one to my husband but he seemed to be ok without mama.

“The title of the exhibition Otenba is the Japanese word for tomboy. Supposedly it is derived from the Dutch word otembaar. Otenba presents the works of Japanese artists who currently reside in Holland. In their work we look for a reflection on the way a new and individualistic environment influences their creative behaviour. Holland being their new home, they have the chance to explore their own limits here without the direct binds of their original culture. They are somewhere in between cultures, one might say, and present new work at Roodkapje.”

performance at Kunstvlaai report 1

I had a chance to give my performance with Petersburg project space. They created a WALL by the gushouder during Kunstvlaai 7 and invited artists to give a meaning to the WALL.

I was programed in 3rd and 4th day.

There are performers behind the black window.

“Wall” often means a divide in many metaphorical examples as well as in my work series entitled ‘In/Out’. Inside a wall is your private space where you feel comfortable whereas everything else is outside/public. I have been creating such a private space in public space to question about ambiguousness and interchangeability of two opposed terms.

“Petersburg project space”, who organized this project, is creating a neutral meaning of WALL in public space. I wanted to play with “public” and “private” in my performance at the WALL.

WALL is not considered as a physical barrier there but it is more like a membrane that is soft, organic and biological. Maybe because I am pregnant I had images of a baby inside the womb very much.
